Area festivals provide spark for Tuscazoar and maple syrup

by Byron Roubanes

"Let's look toward the light," says a passionate volunteer while holding up the Vermont Maple Syrup grading scale to a bottle of Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup for curious spectators. Then comes the taste.
You mean to tell me this was made here in the hills of Tuscarawas County?" asks someone who is still licking the remaining syrup from a swizzle stick dipped into a sample. "Yes, and did you know…?"

Visit the Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup display at Christmas in Zoar, December 4 & 5. Hours for the event are Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12 noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.zca.org/xmasinzoar.html

From the 9th annual Forrest Heritage Festival to the Wilderness Center Naturefest and the Zoar Appelfest, folks young and old have stopped by and learned about the syrup operation, the renewable forest resource and why we embarked on this endeavor. Our maple syrup display offers an introduction into what Tuscazoar has to offer.
Many visitors mention memorable experiences they had camping and hiking the hills at Camp Tuscazoar. Former camp staff members have shared experiences and memories. Family members of past and present campers recall what the effect of Camp Tuscazoar has on them and their loved ones. Former and current Scouts and Scouters recall their involvement in the construction of cabins, trails, and other camp icons.
Our maple syrup has brought together experiences from a man who camped in the 40s with a lady who worked as a teenager in the dining hall kitchen in the 50s. A mountain biker shared a common taste with our Amish friends. A young boy and his great-grandfather shared tales of the same winter lodge. From those who’ve made their own maple syrup to those who have never tasted it, both have demonstrated overwhelming approval.
The maple syrup offers a new opportunity to highlight our camp to current and future generations. We passed out as many as a thousand fliers for the 2005 Maple Days Festival. In addition, all who saw the display and tasted the maple syrup learned that Camp Tuscazoar is open to them and has a variety of things to offer.
How far can we take our Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup? To everyone everywhere! Our syrup has made its way to several Eastern and Midwestern states and to Canada, England, France, Germany, Kosovo and Brazil. Most important is the efforts of those involved in the setup, production, distribution and promotion of this new resource. We are pleased to help "kindle a new flame" for Camp Tuscazoar!

Latest Tuscazoar News

We had a great time at the fall Pig Roast Fund-raiser. The weather was out-standing, the food was terrific and the entertainment was great as usual. We’ve heard that Dan Fladung and his group will join us next year on Sunday. We raised more than $4,000 and every dollar will go straight to upgrades and ongoing expenses. A big thank-you to the following donors: Jim Stoll at Dover Giant Eagle, Bolivar Giant Eagle, Alliance Giant Eagle, Crossroads Market, Buehlers Food Market in Dover, the New Philadelphia Wal-Mart, the Cake Box Bakery, Mimi’s Café and Burger King. Please patronize these businesses and thank them for supporting Camp Tuscazoar!
The camp calendars should be ready to mail by year-end. As always, the calendar will include a listing of next year’s events.
If you’re a member of the Foundation and need an updated copy of the CTF Bylaws, you can now download a copy from our website at www.tuscazoar.org.

Consider Tuscazoar for year-end giving

With the holiday season fast approaching, why not consider supporting Camp Tuscazoar in your gift-giving this year? A bottle or two of Pure, Old-Fashioned Maple Syrup would make an ideal stocking stuffer! And, of course, we have a trading post full of shirts, hats, CDs, patches and other camp items. If possible, we will deliver or ship locally. Also, now is the time to consider donating to the Camp Tuscazoar Endowment Fund. In most cases, contributions are tax deductible. You can help Tuscazoar and get a break on your taxes. Call or visit our website for details.

Camp will host expanded Maple Days Festival April 2-3

Since our Maple Days pancake breakfast in 2004 was so successful, we’ve decided to turn next year’s event into a true festival. The 2005 Maple Days Festival will be held Saturday April 2, 2005 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday April 3, 2005 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to the public and hosted by passionate Camp Tuscazoar volunteers, the festival will be centered on a delicious all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast including sausage, applesauce, orange juice, and Pure, Old Fashioned Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup. Free tours of the syrup operation will be conducted throughout the festival. Period crafters will line central camp to provide an additional attraction for the festival and allow visitors a chance to wander about and enjoy their time while visiting our camp.
Tickets will be $6 for adults and $3 for children (10 & under). The proceeds will help defray the expenses of starting up maple syrup production at camp. Transportation will be provided from the parking lot to the dining hall, and the dining hall will be heated.
Your input is needed. If you know of an artisan crafter or entertainer that is interested in joining this festival please call Camp Tuscazoar at 330-859-2288 or Mike Roberts at 330-262-5769. This will be quite an exciting event and additional help is always needed in a variety of areas both before and during this festival. Please consider helping with the 2005 Maple Days Festival and help keep the spirit burning at Camp Tuscazoar.
