Camp will host second annual
Maple Days festival April 2-3

The maple syrup season is underway again at Camp Tuscazoar. Plastic lines crisscross the woods north of the service road, transporting precious sap to the large collection tanks near the tunnel. From there, the sap is pumped to the sugarhouse to be processed into pure, old-fashioned Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup.
So, when you get another taste of this year’s delicious syrup? At our second annual Tuscazoar Maple Days festival April 2-3! The festival menu will offer all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, applesauce, orange juice and samples of Camp Tuscazoar’s maple syrup. Meals will be served from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 2 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 3 in the camp dining hall. The dining hall will be heated.
Tours of the syrup operation will be conducted throughout the festival. As an added bonus, period crafters will line central camp to provide an additional attraction for the festival and allow visitors a chance to wander about and enjoy their time while visiting our camp.
Tickets for this fund-raiser are $6 for adults and $3 for children (10 & under). The proceeds from this event and from ongoing syrup sales will generate needed funds for camp operations and for maintenance, repair and construction projects.
The public is welcome! Transportation will be provided from the parking lot to the dining hall. Mark your calendars now, and be sure to invite your friends!

Dover Dam Weekend events will focus on law and our legal system

Do television shows like “Judging Amy” and “Boston Legal” offer an accurate look at our country’s legal system? Find out at the 2005 Dover Dam Weekend, scheduled for May 6-8. This year’s Dover Dam Weekend will include several events such as a mock trial and a highway patrol presentation for accurate look into the practice of law and the legal system.
Boy Scouts participating in the activities will be able to earn their Law merit badge, and they should bring a merit badge book, notebook or notepad, pencil or pen, and a merit badge card signed by their Scoutmaster.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will once again lead tours of Dover Dam. The dam was built in the 1930’s to provide flood control for towns and farms along the Tuscarawas River. This year’s record-setting floods in the Tuscarawas River valley should provide a few more interesting stories to these tours.
Check-in will begin Saturday morning from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The organized events will begin at flag-raising and will conclude with an evening campfire program at the Hoover Lodge amphitheater.
The $7 per person activity fee includes all camp events, a souvenir patch and a delicious meal Saturday evening. Camping fees are additional. Groups can attend the Saturday-only activities for $4 per person. For more information, call 330-859-2288 or visit www.tuscazoar.org for updates.

My third year of summer camp - a Tuscazoar memory

By Robert W. Russell Jr.
Assistant Scoutmaster Troop 44
Institutional Representative Troop 15
Eagle Project Advisor Troop 15 and 44

I’ll never forget my third year of summer camp. It was the summer of 1961. Delbert Royer was our Scoutmaster, and Forrest Masterson was our Assistant Scoutmaster. I chose Cooking merit badge as my required merit badge for the camp honors program. I don’t remember the counselor’s name but he said I had the best menus that he had seen. For the merit badge, you had to plan menus for a weekend campout. I made a sumptuous beef stew with potatoes, carrots, peas and onions in nicely browned gravy. We had to invite three guests for lunch. My guests were Delbert and Forrest and another Scouter whom I don’t recall. The lunch was a big success and I earned the Cooking merit badge. I also earned Leatherworking merit badge. I still have the belt I made but it doesn’t fit anymore. It was a great summer for me and the other members of Troop 15. Everyone earned their Pipestone and we were a bunch of happy scouts, grateful for the experiences of summer camp and thankful for our Scout leaders and the time they spent with us. Without them, some of us would not have the memories of Scouting and camping at Camp Tuscazoar.

Wanted: directors, curators, campmasters

The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation still needs enthusiastic, dedicated individuals to serve on its board of directors. You must be a member of the Foundation for one year to be eligible. We currently have two openings on our board. We also need a curator for the W.C. Moorhead Museum and campmasters to oversee the camp on weekends. If you would be willing to serve in one or more of these areas, please contact the camp at 330-859-2288.
