Foundation to acquire
most of original Tuscazoar property
The Camp
Tuscazoar Foundation has reached an agreement to purchase an
additional 113 acres of the original Camp Tuscazoar property from
a Dover family. The sale is expected to be finalized by mid-July.
The purchase will leave only 22 acres of the original camp not in
Foundation hands. However, as part of this purchase, the
Foundation will be given the legal right to utilize the remaining
acreage, so Tuscazoar patrons will continue to enjoy the use of
the entire camp.
The newly-acquired land tract roughly covers an area between White
Eyes Brook (below One Leg campsite) and Shingask Brook (which runs
below Troop One Cabin) and includes the old rifle and archery
ranges; the Johnny Appleseed, Wilderness and Big Tulip campsites;
the Ray Moore Shelter and much of Icky’s Trail. A grant from the
Clean Ohio Fund’s Green Space Conservation Program, which is
administered through the Ohio Public Works Commission, made the
purchase possible.
“We are thrilled to reach this agreement,” said Bob Spencer,
president of the Foundation. “As with our last land purchase, this
agreement helps to preserve our secluded atmosphere and enables us
to finally unify the original camp property.
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation was founded in 1986 as Ohio
non-profit corporation with the purpose of purchasing, maintaining
and perpetuating Camp Tuscazoar. After 23 years, our goal of
purchasing the entire camp property has nearly been achieved.”
Camp Tuscazoar will
host its
20th Pig Roast Sept. 12 & 13
Our next “BIG” event at the camp will be the annual
Pig Roast Fundraiser on September 12 and 13. This will be our 20th
Pig Roast and, boy, how we’ve grown. For those who don’t remember,
our first roast was in a dining hall with only basic electricity
and no running water. We cooked in a pit in front of the loading
dock and washed dishes in washtubs filled with water heated over a
fire. We’ve come a long way, baby!
This year’s event will again feature live music on Saturday and
Sunday. Saturday we are grateful to have “Dulcimers and Such” and
Sunday's group of “Friends” will bring back lots of memories.
The menu will feature our delicious roasted pork, chicken, baked
potato, green beans, rolls, butter, beverages and, of course,
homemade desserts (including our famous PIG cookies). The serving
hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
We are keeping the same prices: $10 for adults, $4 for children
(advance purchase) and $12/$5 at the door. If you want to be sure
to get tickets in advance (here comes the plug), then join the
Camp Tuscazoar Foundation and the tickets will appear in your
mail! How much better can it get? Tickets are available from any
Foundation member or by calling the camp at 330-859-2288 or Nancy
Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386. |

Scouts can earn Law merit badge at Pig Gig The Pig
Gig is back and better than ever. This year, Sept. 11-13, we will
be offering an opportunity for Scouts to earn Law merit badge
while enjoying all the fun of a weekend campout at Tuscazoar. This
should be a very popular event and we recommend that you get your
site booked as soon as possible. We will keep you informed of any
prerequisites that might be needed to complete the merit badge.
Also, there will be a very special campfire program with a noted
lawyer from the past. You won’t want to miss this event!
The fee will be $7 per person (regardless of age) which will
include our famous pig dinner (chicken can be added for an
additional $3). Plan to join us for this great experience. |

Spring events drew large crowds to Camp Tuscazoar
What a fantastic Maple Days Weekend we had in
April! More than 800 folks came to enjoy a breakfast of
pancakes, sausage and our own Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup.
The entire weekend was a huge success and we were blessed
with great weather and many hungry customers. We also had
the benefit of help from the Kohl’s Department store “A”
Team, who assisted with serving. The camp was blessed with
a profit of more than $5,000, which will go a long way in
helping us with needed upkeep and new projects. We would
like to thank everyone who took time to either sell
tickets or came down to camp and enjoy the time meeting
with old friends and being back at the place you hold so
dearly in your hearts. From the entire board of directors
a big “thank you” and we sure hope to see you at the
upcoming Pig Roast event in September.
Our Dover Dam Weekend has become quite a tradition and, in
true Tuscazoar style, Friday night check-in was typical of
our long history of “rain the hills”. The “biggest storm
of the season” seemed to descend on camp just as all the
troops were checking in. Fortunately, it didn’t detour our
excited campers, who filled the camp to its capacity. The
scouts spent the weekend learning all about auto mechanics
from the many presenters who came in to help. The air bag
demonstrations definitely generated a lot of interest!
And, as usual, the day ended with a rousing campfire
program at the Hoover Lodge Amphitheater, where the group
skits were very entertaining. Even Billy Mays made an
appearance. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2010
Dover Dam Weekend, and watch the Breeze and our website
for more details.

Tuscazoar turns
90 next year
The year 2010 will mark the
100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States and the
90th anniversary of Camp Tuscazoar. Be sure to watch for
upcoming details regarding this important year in the
history of our camp. Many special activities will be
planned throughout the year and you will want to stay
up-to-date through the Breeze and our website. As you
begin to plan for next year, make sure you include Camp
Tuscazoar in your group calendars.
Calendar time again
Work has
begun on the 2010 Camp Tuscazoar Calendar of Events. We
are seeking advertisers to help fund printing and mailing
the calendar to our members. If you know a company that
might support us with an advertisement, please let us
know. If you don’t currently receive the calendar, then
just sign up as member and it will arrive in your mailbox!
It’s another great perk of being a member. Start thinking
now about your group’s 2010-11 camping dates and get them
on the Camp Tuscazoar Calendar of Events. We only charge
$5 per listing and your group can have as many listings as
it wants. Maybe someone is going to have a special event,
such as an Eagle Award. Why not mark the event on our
calendar so everyone knows? (then the next step is to
purchase an Eagle Brick). Just use the order form below to
send us your info.

Philatelist needed for new stamp
collection
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has been
given a wonderful collection of stamps which include a large number of
“Scout” stamps from all over the world. In order to do justice to this
collection and to share it with our museum visitors, we are looking
for someone with knowledge of collecting and displaying stamps to give
us a call so we can get advice on the best way to present this
collection. If you or someone you know could give us a hand, please
contact Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386 and let her know. This is a
wonderful gift and we certainly want it handled correctly. Thanks in
advance for your help.

Memberships vital for camp
support!
For more than 20 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
