Restoration of Zoarville Station Bridge now
officially underway
By the time you read this, the restoration of
the Zoarville Station Bridge will be underway! The Ohio Department
of Transportation has awarded the contract for restoration and
reconstruction of the bridge, and construction of its approaches,
to Sheldon Gantt, the contractor that disassembled the bridge back
in 2000.
Restoration of the iron bridge components began on July 7th,
and reconstruction is scheduled to begin on September 1st. While
the restoration proceeds, Sheldon Gantt will construct the
approaches. The actual restoration work will be done by The Makers
of Hand-Forged Iron in their shop in Logan, Ohio. Their website
is: www.themakersofhandforgediron.com. If you visit their website,
you will note that they have done iron work for the home of Ohio
Governor Bob Taft.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of
October, and further details will be forthcoming about the actual
date the bridge will be dedicated. Watch the website for pictures
and updates as this work progresses. The website for this is:
www.tuscazoar.org/ZSB.htm.
The Zoarville Station Bridge is the only Fink through-truss
bridge known to exist in the United States. Originally part of the
three-span bridge over the Tuscarawas River in Dover, this span
was moved to its present site over Conotton Creek in 1905. The
Foundation’s involvement in the restoration of the bridge began in
August of 1996 and has all been paid for without using Foundation
funds. Once completed, the bridge will carry the Zoar Valley
Trail, the Ohio-to-Erie Trail and Buckeye Trail, and the
interstate North Country Scenic Trail. The bridge will also give
the youth using the camp access to the Ohio-Erie Canal Corridor
and the towpath trail.

Pig Roast fund-raiser will offer great
food and much-needed support
In a few weeks, the gates of Camp Tuscazoar
will swing open to the public for our annual
Pig Roast Fund-raiser. This is your
chance to support Camp Tuscazoar and get a delicious meal at the
same time. Dinner hours on Saturday, Sept. 9 are 3 to 7
p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 10 from 12 to 4 p.m.
The usual fixin’s of Roast pork, barbecued chicken, green
beans, applesauce, baked potatoes, rolls and butter, beverage, and
homemade desserts will be provided. And, as always, the camp will
be open for those who want to visit their old summer camp site,
the lodges, Pioneer Point, Buzzard’s Roost or other points of
interest.
Proceeds fund repairs, maintenance and equipment purchases. They
also help with the rising costs of electricity, trash removal,
propane, supplies and other operating expenses. Your continuing
support at the Pig Roast fund-raiser is a vital part of our
efforts to keep the camp open and operating.
Advance ticket prices remain $10 for adults and $4 for children, or
$12 and $5 at the door. For tickets, call 330-493-1386 or
330-859-2288 or contact a member of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation.
Spread the word. Let’s make this our most successful year ever! |

Latest Tuscazoar news The
Richard W. Belcher Memorial Lodge is open for campers.
However, the lodge is still under construction and much work is
needed to finish this project. Several grant requests are due in
the next few weeks. Hopefully these grants will provide funds to
keep this project moving. We have contacted several suppliers
seeking donations. We currently need plumbing supplies (two
toilets, two bathroom sinks, two shower stalls, two kitchen sinks,
two stoves and two refrigerators). If you can assist, please call
Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386.
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation will be staffing a booth at the
New Philadelphia Farmer’s Market beginning July 18. We will
be promoting the camp and selling our maple syrup and pig roast
tickets. The market is open from 7 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays in
Tuscora Park, located at 161 Tuscora Ave. NW. Stop by and see us! |

Buckeye Council Story DVD available with your
contribution
The Buckeye Council, Boy Scouts of
America and Camp Tuscazoar have very rich histories that will be
forever intertwined. That's why we are very proud to be able to make
The Story of Buckeye Council 1916 - 2005 DVD available to thank you
for supporting Camp Tuscazoar.
With your tax deductible donation of $10 or more (plus $4 for
shipping and handling), we will send this DVD, which tells the story
of this area's Boy Scout movement in digitally mastered pictures
from the collections of area Scouters. The DVD is narrated by
Scouters both young and old in moving voices that echo the reverence
each holds for their own bits of the "story."
We want you to see and share this magnificent collection of
rare images. We want you to feel the paths as Scouts long past trod
them, carving them into the hillsides of our Camp Tuscazoar and Camp
Buckeye, and of Seven Ranges Scout Reservation, where vital programs
continue to teach Scouting to our area youth.
By helping us to keep Camp Tuscazoar operating, you become a part
of our history as well. To order a copy of this DVD, visit
www.tuscazoar.org/ SupportCampTuscazoar.htm
and click on the link to our contribution form. We
thank you for your support.

Plans begin for Camp Tuscazoar Maple and Living
History Festival
We are looking forward to our
2007 Maple and Living History Festival, March 24 & 25. By
planning early, we believe we can host a larger, better event.
Last year’s festival included Native American re-enactors and
re-enactors from the Revolutionary and Civil War eras. We are
seeking people to help organize and conduct this fine event or
to participate as re-enactors, crafters, vendors or musicians.
If you are interested, please contact Mike Roberts: e-mail to
robertsphc@earthlink.net; fax to 330-263-7546 or call by phone
at 330-621-1286 or 330-262 5769. Thank you in advance for your
support.
We plan to enter the John Berry Mid Summer Maple Contest
2006 to be held July 29. In 2004, the Foundation entered
this contest and won the new sugar makers award (in production
five years or less). Last year, we chose not to enter because
the maple production was poor in our area. Wish us luck this
year and look for Camp Tuscazoar Maple Syrup to be displayed at
the state fair in the ag-hort building.
Maple Fun Fact: It’s not what we put in our syrup that
matters; it’s what we take out (water).

1 cup Tuscazoar Maple Syrup |

several hours. Mix sugar, egg, milk, and Bisquick until moist. Beat hard for 30
seconds. Stir in nut mix. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350o for 45
minutes. Cool and frost as desired. Enjoy!
Dana Powers continues as Ranger
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has
extended its contract with Ranger Dana Powers through 2009. Dana
joined the Foundation in 1994, when he filled a trustee position
vacated by Cecil Moorhead. He served as the Foundation’s treasurer
until 2000, when he agreed to become the camp Ranger. As Ranger,
Dana is responsible for all camp use reservations. He also handles
communications, camp security, maintenance, acquisition of supplies,
mowing, plowing, EPA and health department requirements and
inspections and camp tours. During Dana’s tenure, the camp has
installed new water lines, restored Troop 5 Cabin, timbered the
northern end and established the maple syrup operation. And camp
usage has continued to increase as campers, hikers, equestrians,
canoeists, bicyclists, families, and re-enactors all seek to use the
facilities. Dana is also employed full-time at the Timken Company in
Canton. He believes the future of Tuscazoar depends on positive
ex-periences for youth. Tuscazoar will create such fond memories for
them that when they are older, they will come back to carry on our
legacy.

American Hiking Society fall clean-up opened to
all
For the past three years,
Camp Tuscazoar has welcomed volunteers from the American
Hiking Society (AHS) for a week of service at the camp.
Volunteers from Maryland to California, and Wisconsin to
Florida, have used their vacation time and personal expenses
to travel to Tuscazoar to clear trails and other work
throughout camp. This successful venture was initiated and
mentored by Dave Tschantz. Camp director Dan Gier and Ranger
Dana Powers have worked closely with these groups to make
certain the week is both productive and fun.
This fall, we would like to expand this venture to area
volunteers as well. From Sunday October 15 to Friday October
20, we will welcome another group of AHS volunteers. You are
invited to participate also. We will be clearing and
maintaining Icky’s Trail, the railroad bed, the Zoar Valley
Trail and working on other outdoor projects, weather
permitting. This week is typically the most colorful fall
foliage week of the season. We will provide sleeping
accommodations in Duryee Lodge, Belcher Memorial Lodge and the
Stone building for those who wish to stay overnight. We can
also arrange for the use of other cabins, campsites or the use
of your personal camper, if you choose. Meals will be
provided.
The work day typically begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at
3:30 p.m. We encourage you to bring your tools to camp. This
is an excellent opportunity to work with others from across
the United States to improve Camp Tuscazoar.
We are requesting an $18 participation fee to help cover the
cost of meals. This adds up to less than $1.25 per meal. We
will accept registrations until noon on Saturday, September
30. After that date, we will purchase supplies and cannot
refund your participation fee. If you can only participate for
a few days, please let us know and we can make special
arrangements. For additional information, or to register for
this event, please contact Ranger Dana Powers at 330-859-2288
or via e-mail at

Artwork raffle to benefit camp
One of Camp Tuscazoar’s equestrian patrons, Carl
Englebrecht, has hand-crafted a beautiful horse’s head using
intarsia, a craft of selecting different types of wood fitted and
glued to create an almost 3-D inlaid, mosaic-like picture. The
natural grain patterns and colors in the wood (rather than dyes and
stains) create unique colors in the pattern. Each piece of wood is
individually crafted by cutting, shaping, sanding and finishing and
is then assembled like a jigsaw puzzle. A final layer of finish is
applied to complete the project.
The artwork measures 29” x 25” and is made from ash, cherry,
maple, poplar, and walnut. The finished artwork will be raffled and
the proceeds will benefit camp facilities. The drawing will be held
at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at the pig roast. Raffle tickets are $1
each or 6 for $5. Contact the camp at 330-859-2288 or the website at
www.tuscazoar.org for info. Carl also helped the camp by acquiring
many sponsors for previous camp ride-a-thons. Thanks Carl!

Camp wish list continues to grow
Camp Tuscazoar always needs equipment
donations to help maintain and improve the camp. However, because last
year’s tool shed fire destroyed most of our hand tools, we are
especially in need of items such as leaf rakes, garden rakes, shovels,
sledge hammers, brooms, trimmers, and weed whips. We are also seeking
ladders, hand tools, compressors and hoses. We greatly appreciate the
donations we have received so far.
We need appliances as well, such as stoves and refrigerators
in good condition. These items are needed to serve campers in the
recently opened Stone and Richard W. Belcher lodges. Also, we can use
pots, pans, silverware, serving spoons and other kitchen items.
If you have a car or truck in good condition that you would
consider donating, please let us know. We might be able to use the
vehicle or sell it and use the proceeds to benefit the camp. We are
seeking donations of conduit, wire and plumbing to run water towards Rex
Farrall campsite, and to restore the electric line to Troop 5 cabin.
We have been blessed by many donations in the past from those
who own and operate specialized equipment. Please let us know of anyone
who might be willing to loan a bucket truck, bobcat, back hoe, truck or
trencher. Your assistance with these items would be greatly appreciated.

Inspections passed; spraying completed
Camp Tuscazoar has once again passed
its annual inspection with the Tuscarawas County Health Dept. Inspectors
examined the dining hall kitchen; serving and dining facilities; the
maple syrup operation and other camp facilities. They also sampled the
camp water. Quarterly water samples are tested and the results are sent
to the Ohio EPA.
The first mosquito spraying of the year has been completed.
Because the life cycle of a mosquito is about two weeks, we will likely
schedule another spray this summer. |
Elections scheduled for annual meeting
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation is once again
seeking enthusiastic, dedicated individuals to serve on its board of
directors. You must be a member of the Foundation for one year to be
eligible. We will have several openings on our board. These positions
will be filled at the annual meeting in October. Our directors play a
vital role in shaping the future direction of Camp Tuscazoar and
making certain the camp remains open and operating for future
generations. If you would be willing to serve, please contact the camp
at 330-859-2288 or via e-mail at
info@tuscazoar.org.

Annual Membership Drive Underway!
For nearly 20 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
