Fire destroys tool house; new
lodge now under construction
Camp Tuscazoar's tool house was destroyed by
fire in the early morning of March 14th, 2005. The building and
all contents were lost. The cause of the fire was not determined,
but was likely due to electrical failure. The tool house, a block
structure built in the 1950s, sat alongside the service road in
central camp. It housed the camp's electrical service, water pump
and well head, and was storage for tools and other small
equipment.
Temporary arrangements were made for water and electrical
service. Weekend camping and the spring Maple Days Festival
continued planned. Our shovels, rakes, posthole diggers, tree
trimmers, mowers, lanterns and other camp maintenance equipment
stored in the building were destroyed. Donations of replacement
tools are much needed, especially during the summer months.
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has chosen to replace the tool
house building with a new three-story structure; construction is
already under way. The building will house our new electrical
service and water treatment facilities, all located in a lower
level dedicated for "tool house" use.
The exciting news in our recovery plan is the new building's
ground level will offer lodging for the handicapped and will
include sleeping, cooking and restroom areas. A second story will
also be fully handicapped accessible and will serve as our new
Campmaster headquarters and lodge. Duryee Lodge will become a
regular rented lodge for smaller groups. The Camp Tuscazoar
Foundation is truly excited by the plans for this new building.
The fire loss was a setback but we are growing from it in positive
ways! We are now seeking donations to support this project. If you
can contribute funds, tools, materials, time or equipment to help
us restore this building, please call the camp at 330-859-2288 or
e-mail us at
info@tuscazoar.org.

Tuscazoar’s most popular event of the year, our Pig Roast

stories, or just a chance to roam the hills, this event offers
something for everyone. The dining hall doors will be open

Tuscazoar tidbits
Here are a few items to keep in mind
about Camp Tuscazoar. Some of these things you may have forgotten;
some you might not have known. Read on…
Zoar Valley Trail
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation
operates the Zoar Valley Trail, from Bolivar to New Philadelphia.
Patches and medals are available for those who successfully complete
this 17-mile hike. From pioneer settlements to canal locks, this
trail provides a glimpse into Ohio history. Camp Tuscazoar offers an
overnight stopping point along the trail. For more information,
visit
www.tuscazoar.org/zoarvalleytrail.htm.
“Adopt-A-Site” Program
So your group wants to camp, but
can’t afford to pay camping fees? We have the solution. At
Tuscazoar, your group can spend the weekend in a campsite at no
charge, provided the group completes an approved four-hour work
project. To participate, inquire when you make your reservations.
You need to save money; we need to get the work done. Let's work
together to make them both happen!
Bricks still available
You can purchase an engraved brick
for $25 to honor an Eagle Scout, to remember a lost loved one or to
express your support for Camp Tuscazoar. The Eagle bricks will be
placed in the Eagle Walk outside the W.C. Moorhead Museum, and
others are placed in prominent locations in camp for all visitors to
see. Pick up a brochure at camp or visit our website at
www.tuscazoar.org/eaglebricks.htm.

membership to those less than 18 years of age. Junior members are

Weather provided challenges for “spring”
Maple Days Festival
The Maple Days Festival was
moved from March to April this year to take advantage of
the warmer spring weather. But the wind and snow that
arrived just in time for this event made it seem more like
January. Despite the cold and snow, hundreds turned out to
enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast and sample this year’s
maple syrup. At times, our chefs were put to the test to
keep the supply of hot pancakes and sausage flowing.
Several exhibitors and crafters were on hand as well. From
Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers to those making
birdhouses, quilts and kettle corn, the festival offered a
variety of interesting displays.
Tours of the maple syrup operation were offered as well. This
year’s short maple syrup season meant that the sugar house
could not be fully operational, but guests were able to
tour the sugar house and learn from a variety of displays.
The camp also expanded its syrup offerings, packaging the
maple syrup in pint, quarts, half-gallons and gallons.
These products, along with a variety of gift baskets, are
now available online at
http://stores.ebay.com/Daves-Tuscazoar-Trading-Post.
Hopefully next year’s weather will be more cooperative. Watch
for announcements on the 2006 Maple Days Festival in
future issues of the Breeze.

The Buckeye Trail Riders will once
again host a Ride-A-Thon to benefit Camp Tuscazoar. All area
riders are invited to attend the Camp Tuscazoar Ride-A-Thon on
August 14 at the camp.
Registration for the Sunday trail ride will begin at 9 a.m.
The ride will leave the main parking lot promptly at 10 a.m.,

The Buckeye Trail Riders are a family-oriented trail riding
organization that works to preserve bridle/ multi use horse
trails for the next generation. They were founded 20 years ago
by a group of dedicated trail riders who wanted to create a
system of bridle trails at Harrison Forest near Cadiz, Ohio.
Today, Buckeye Trail Riders are the stewards of 20 miles of
trails at Harrison Forest. They enjoy trailing riding together
throughout Ohio.
Camp Tuscazoar was established in 1921 and has been operated
by the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation since 1987. The Foundation is
a non-profit organization led by a 16-member board of
directors. Volunteers and enthusiasts who enjoy the camp for
its outdoor experience do much of the maintenance work on its
trails and facilities. Camp Tuscazoar has many multi-use
trails and is open daily to hikers, cyclists and horse riders.
The camp may be enjoyed during the posted open hours by merely
signing in and out of the camp. Summer hours are from 8:30
a.m. to 8 p.m.

Bridge restoration project continues
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)
has agreed to provide a local development grant to fund additional costs
of restoring and re-erecting the Zoarville Station Bridge and
constructing the approaches. Revised estimates had resulted in a deficit
in funding for these costs and ODOT has agreed to cover those costs up
to the estimated amounts. This will allow the project to move forward
without the need to secure additional funding.
The Tuscarawas County Commissioners have passed legislation
committing Tuscarawas County to pay its share of all restoration and
reconstruction expenses for the project. The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation
has committed to 100% reimbursement of the county out of previously
awarded grant funds. With the passage of this legislation, ODOT is now
able to solicit bids.
ODOT initially said it would advertise for bids on May 15th,
open bids on June 6th, and award the contract on June 16th. However, the
date for bid opening has been pushed back due to the difficulty in
fabricating replacement sections for portions of the bridge columns that
are badly corroded and must be replaced.
The Buckeye Trail Association has contributed an additional
$250 toward remaining expenses. Their website is
www.buckeyetrail.org. Thanks,
BTA!

Annual Membership Drive Underway!
For more than 15 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
