Join us for good food and fun at
the fall Pig
Roast Fund-Raiser
Preparations are now underway for the annual
Camp Tuscazoar Pig Roast, our biggest fund-raiser of the year. The
popular weekend event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11 from
3 to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 12 from 12 to 4 p.m. at
the camp dining hall.
Our guests will feast on roast pork, barbecued chicken, green
beans, applesauce, baked potatoes, rolls and butter, beverage, and
homemade desserts. No one will need to leave hungry! Transportation will be provided to and from the parking lot.
The Pig Roast is not only open to the public, but we encourage you
to invite everyone you know! The food is always outstanding and
visitors can also enjoy musical entertainment, hike the trails,
visit the museum or reminisce with friends.
Proceeds fund repairs, maintenance and equipment purchases. They
also help with the rising costs of electricity, trash removal,
propane, supplies and other operating expenses.
Advance ticket prices remain $10 for adults and $4 for children, or
$12 and $5 at the door. For tickets, call 330-493-1386 or
330-859-2288 or contact a member of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation.
Help needed for Pig Roast weekend
Would you or your
organization be willing to assist with this year’s Pig Roast
fund-raiser? We could use help in these areas:
. We will be offering many types of fun “pig” activities on
Saturday for those groups camping over the weekend. Help is needed
in supervising these activities.
. Extra hands are always needed in the kitchen and cooking
areas. No experience is required! We could also use some additional
helpers on Sunday for the final clean-up.
. Parking lot staffers are needed to keep everything running
smoothly. This helps keep our visitors happy!
. Ticket sales are a major source of income. If you are not a
member of the Foundation, but would like to help sell tickets,
please call 330-859-2288 and let us know!

WW II reenactors battle at Tuscazoar
Dateline: Camp
Tuscazoar
|
|
2004/March - 1000hrs (10am) |
As the rising sun illuminated the morning fog, elements of the
U.S. 5th infantry and the Axis 2nd Panzer division approached each
other. Military vehicles and armored cars patrolled the perimeters.
Heavy, sporadic gunfire could be heard as units encountered each
other during the day's heavy fighting. Units could be seen in the
distance from Buzzard's Roost to Central Camp. Casualties were
reported as light to moderate on both sides. A clear victor was not
evident at this writing. Both tactical groups were reenacting battle
situations using weapons and tactics from the World War II era. The
2nd Panzer division hosted the weekend and all enjoyed a meal in the
dining hall at the end of the events. Rumor has it the local
Sheriff's department stopped by to make sure all was well.

Maple Days festival set for April 2 & 3, 2005
Camp Tuscazoar will host its second
annual Maple Days festival April 2 & 3, 2005. A delicious
breakfast including all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, applesauce
and orange juice will be served. Tours of the maple syrup production
area will also be offered. Mark your calendars now and watch for
more information in future issues of the Breeze.

Visitors learn new skills at annual
Primitive Gathering
The Primitive Gathering at Camp
Tuscazoar in June was an interesting and fun time.
First-time visitors were able to learn some of the basic
procedures for the making of bows, arrows, atlatls and
darts from scratch as they were made a couple of hundred
years ago to even a thousand years ago. They could see
arrow heads taking form from a piece of flint, a pattern
developing from a beadwork project and a deer hide being
tanned for use as future drum heads or clothing. Many took
advantage of the shooting ranges to try out a borrowed bowIMAGE
or atlatl to learn what kind of skill was required to be a
successful hunter. Some took their turn at scraping the
hair of the deer hide. Others were inspired to begin their
own projects of making a bow, an atlatl, or even an arrow
head under the watchful eyes of expert instructors. And
many people returned to the Primitive Gathering this year
to continue projects they had started in previous years,
to get more help for their projects, to show off a project
that they have completed since last year and even to serve
as an instructor in their new-found hobby. Venders were
available with raw
materials
to make a desired project and finished bows, arrows,
atlatls, drums and bow work benches. If you missed this
event, mark next year's calendar for the weekend after
Father's Day, June 25 and 26, 2005.

Icky
wants you!
Camp Tuscazoar has always been a place to make
friends, learn skills, work together for our group and community and
enjoy nature. We invite you to do all the above and help keep the
spirit burning. We have several projects at camp (ranging from a
couple hours to a couple of days in length) where we can use an
extra hand. Also, if you have been a member for a year or more and
would like to donate ideas, time, energy and sometimes muscle, we
are looking for board members. Please call Mike Roberts at
330-263-7550 or e-mail the camp for more information. Icky is
counting on you!

Ohio Edison clearing below power lines
As you may have heard, last summer's power
failure began in Ohio as a result of trees growing too close to power
lines. Ohio Edison, like others in the power industry, has begun a major
push to clear their transmission power lines of undergrowth.
Mike Meese, general foreman with Nelson Tree Service, a
subsidiary of Asplundh, has been working in our area to clear the
right-of-way for the 138KV transmission lines that run from the Ohio
River past camp and up to the Canton/ Massillon area. The work is hard
and is being done by several ground crews from this area with the help
of a Ford 4WD heavy brush hog unit. These crews work mostly in the
eastern part of the state but on occasion have gone to the Gulf of
Mexico area.
The right-of-way near the southern boundary of camp, by the
Zoarite Iron Mines, is being cleared now. In the past, we have kept a
portion of this area cleared for hikers and campers. Although not shown
on current maps, we referred to this backpack area as "Edison
Field". There is a splendid view of the stars there at night and in
time an area many times the size of Hoover Field will be ready for use.
When completed, a view of the river from the mines should be
possible.
As a reminder, the power poles are property of Ohio Edison
and are not to be used for climbing or play. Also, never attempt to pull
loose or retrieve any items such as balloons, kites or steamers snagged
in power lines. Power lines must never be touched or contacted under any
circumstances.

Museum curator needed
We are seeking a volunteer curator for the
W.C. Moorhead Museum, someone who is interested in history, likes to
organize information and displays, is detail-oriented and can work
independently. The curator will work with the Foundation's Museum
Committee in handling display items and organizing displays. This
position might be ideal for a retiree who is looking for a way to help
Camp Tuscazoar. The museum's purpose is to preserve and perpetuate the
rich history of Camp Tuscazoar and its contribution to the growth of
area scouting. If you are interested in helping, please contact the
camp at 330-859-2288.

Annual Membership Drive Underway!
For more than 15 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
We will keep the spirit burning at
