Think SNOW for this year’s Gold Rush
competition, February 7-9
At last year’s Gold Rush, temperatures
were in the 50’s. This year will be different! So, bring your
sleds and let the cobwebs gather on your wheelbarrows.
The $10 per
person fee includes a patch, and Saturday breakfast and dinner.
Register at Duryee Lodge at check in. Cracker Barrel is at 9 p.m.
Friday for handouts and other details.
An
inspection will follow flag raising. Dress properly for the
weather and bring the equipment listed below. Points will be
awarded throughout the day for leadership, spirit and
participation.
Use your
compass to find your way to the event locations.
There’s nothing
like camping in the snow! Pitch the tent you are carrying
and explain why you chose its location.
A knife
and ax make quick work in starting a fire on a winter campout.
Do you know how to sharpen them and use them safely?
Build a
fire a cook a good one-pot stew for lunch. You choose the
ingredients. Judges will taste and you should delight their
palates. After lunch, clean up your area.
How wide is
the Tuscarawas River? How high is the big oak in Tall Trees? Learn
to measure widths you can’t reach across and heights you can’t
reach.
Forget
your rope? You’ll have a chance to make one today.
Rescue
Humpty Dumpty, fix his crown and bring him up the hill. It’s a first aid problem.
Most
importantly: be prepared for Tuscazoar in its mid-winter snow!

Dover Dam Weekend to offer a look at Ohio life in the 1800's,
May 2-4
Join
Ohio’s bicentennial celebration at this year’s Dover Dam
Weekend, May 2-4, as we catch a glimpse of life in the 1800’s.
A Civil War
reenactment; mountain men; cavalry; an old-time steam engine and
other surprises await weekend visitors. Scouts who attend will have
an opportunity to earn American Heritage merit badge. And, as
always, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will lead guided tours of
Dover Dam for camp visitors. Saturday’s events will conclude with
an evening campfire program at the Hoover Lodge amphitheater.
Campsites are still
available. The $7 per person activity fee includes all camp events,
a souvenir patch and a BBQ beef dinner Saturday evening. A Cracker
Barrel and leader’s meeting is planned for Friday evening. A
second meeting will be held Saturday morning at breakfast for
day-only attendees. For more information, call 330-859-2288.

Pig weekend
another big success!
Everyone left the 2002 Camp Tuscazoar Pig Gig/Pig
Roast weekend filled with the good food and great memories. The
weather wasn’t perfect…but if it weren’t raining, it wouldn’t
be Tuscazoar.
This year’s Pig Gig
included a night hike and rifle and archery ranges. The OUTSTANDING
campfire program at Troop 5 Cabin hosted by the members of the Troop 5
Foundation will long be remembered. A clear night made the mix of
patriotic and traditional camp songs and skits even more special. The
singing could be heard well into the wee hours of the morning.
Nearly 600 people attended
the Pig Roast. Had the weather been more cooperative, who knows how
many former campers and their families would have joined us? But,
never fret! You will get this same chance next year. The gross profit
from this event topped $7000 for the first time ever, thanks in large
part to the efforts of our members, who worked hard to sell their
allotment of tickets. We look forward to seeing you again next year,
and we promise to have more PIG cookies baked and ready to eat. Thanks
to all of you for making this such a great event!
A salute to Eagle Edward L.
Cavitt
Many Eagle
scouts have explored the paths at Tuscazoar. They may have started
the journey to Eagle here, climbing to the Roost, learning to swim,
identifying plants or setting the table to eat. One such became the
third Eagle in Carroll County in 1932, Edward L. Cavitt.
A 1933 graduate of
Carrollton High School, he served his country in World War II,
participating in the invasions of Leyte and Okinawa. He was also a
newsman for more than 40 years, retiring as executive editor of the
Free Press Standard in 1981. Many local scouts received their Eagle
Scout oath from Mr. Cavitt. He was a member of the CTF, VFW,
American Legion, FFA, NAARP and many other organizations. In July,
Mr. Cavitt passed away at the age of 87.
To Edward Cavitt, and all the other Eagles who have
helped to lead and to guide: thank you. When you next visit the
camp, look for Mr. Cavitt’s Eagle brick outside the museum.
