Annual Tuscazoar Pig
Roast fund-raiser set for Sept. 10, 11
Join us for our annual Pig Roast
Fundraiser on September 10 and 11. Our 22nd roast will feature the
same great food: delicious roast pork, chicken, baked potato,
green beans, rolls, butter, beverages and homemade desserts
(including our famous PIG cookies). As always, you can tour the
camp, meet friends and reminisce. This year's event will again
feature musical entertainment. Saturday we are pleased to have
"Dulcimers and Such" and Sunday's group of "Jim,
Norm and Cher" will bring back memories. Hours are 3 to 7
p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets at the door
will be $15 for adults/$5 for children. Advance tickets remain at
$10 and $4 so get your tickets in advance. And if you join the
Camp Tuscazoar Foundation, tickets will appear in your mail. How
much better can it get? For tickets, call the camp at 330-859-2288
or by calling Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386.
Orienteering event coincides with Fall Flapjack
Flip
In conjunction with the Northeast Ohio
Orienteering Club (NEOOC), Camp Tuscazoar will host a two-day
orienteering event. Both cross country and score courses will be
set up on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2. Scouts
can participate just for the fun of completing one or more real
orienteering courses, while exploring the nooks and crannies of
the camp. The bonus for Scouts is that in completing the courses,
they will satisfy requirements for Orienteering merit badge. In
addition, NEOOC will host clinics on Saturday and Sunday to help
Scouts become better at orienteering and also satisfy other merit
badge requirements. Those already skilled in orienteering will
have the opportunity to test themselves against the best times and
scores of other Scouts. Some may be good enough to challenge the
NEOOC regulars, who compete in regional, national and even
international events. Come for the weekend or just for a day. The
cost per participant is $12, which is good for admission to all
courses for the weekend, an event patch, a Saturday night campfire
and one meal pass for an all-you-can-eat meal at the Fall Flapjack
Flip. Camping fees are extra - contact the camp for specifics.

Icky's Point of Interest

George
M. "Chief" Deaver
George M. Deaver chanced upon a Scouting career when he came to
Canton in 1914 to visit relatives. He accepted a position as
Scouting Commissioner with the YMCA's new Scouting program, and in
1923 he replaced Seldon Adams as Council Executive with the McKinley
Area Council. Thus began a relationship between George Deaver and
Camp Tuscazoar that extended more than 30 years. He also led the
committee that developed the Pipestone Camp Honors Program in 1926.
Because of his dual role as Scout Executive and leader of the
Pipestone Program, he became known as "Chief". Chief
Deaver stayed in Scouting until 1953, helping thousands of boys
along the road from boyhood to manhood. His interest in camping and
the part it plays in the formation of character was the driving
force in Camp Tuscazoar's development. He will always be linked with
our camp. |

Options
considered for Deaver memorial
The CTF board has recently renewed plans to build a memorial to
George M. "Chief" Deaver. Chief Deaver was instrumental in
the founding of Camp Tuscazoar and the Pipestone Camp Honors
Program. In fact, campers in the Buckeye Council still sing
"The Chief's Song" on Sunday night at summer camp as a
tribute to those who helped found summer camping for scouts in our
area.
The original plans for a permanent memorial to be
constructed at Camp Tuscazoar were incomplete and efforts ceased in
1972. The Board is starting fresh and exploring several options and
we welcome your ideas. We would also encourage those with memories
or memorabilia of the Deaver era that they would like to share to do
so. Donations of any kind would also gladly be accepted.
There are also several plaques commemorating Scouters
that have found their way to the W. C. Moorhead Museum. These
plaques need to find their way back into camp to be displayed as
intended. Again, we welcome those memories or memorabilia of these
great Scouters to share them with us. Please contact the board with
any information you might have.
You may also honor any past staffer from Camp Tuscazoar
or Camp Buckeye that had an impact on your life by sharing the
memory with us. We are in the phase of seeking information. Camp
Tuscazoar was founded and built by people that stepped forward to
serve the camp and the community. We hope to share these memories at
future events.
Flapjack
Flip Oct. 1 & 2
Camp Tuscazoar's annual Fall Flapjack Flip will be held Oct.
1 and 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will include pancakes, Camp
Tuscazoar Maple Syrup, sausage, applesauce, orange drink and coffee.
The price will be $6 for adults and $3 for children (age 10 and
under). Tickets will be available at the door or in advance by
contacting Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386. We hope to see you
there! |

Calendar time again
Work has begun on the 2011 Camp
Tuscazoar Calendar of Events. We are seeking advertisers
to help fund printing and mailing the calendar to our
members. If you know a company that might support us with
an advertisement, please let us know. If you don't
currently receive the calendar, then just sign up as
member and it will arrive in your mailbox! It's another
great perk of being a member. Start thinking now about
your group's 2011-12 camping dates and get them on the
Camp Tuscazoar Calendar of Events. We only charge $5 per
listing and your group can have as many listings as it
wants. Maybe someone is going to have a special event,
such as an Eagle Award. Why not mark the event on our
calendar so everyone knows? (then the next step is to
purchase an Eagle Brick). Just use the order form below to
send us your info.

Cannon back at
Tuscazoar
A cannon is once again positioned on the Camp
Tuscazoar parade grounds, a tradition started in 1927
when Council Executive George Deaver brought an 1884
Strong Cadet cannon, owned by the Dueber-Hampden Watch
Company, down to Camp Tuscazoar. This cannon, donated
by Troop 90 of New Philadelphia, also is no stranger
to Buckeye Council's summer camps and has the
distinction of being used for Retreat ceremonies at
both Camp Buckeye and Camp Tuscazoar. It was
originally painted red, white and blue and used at
Camp Buckeye's summer camp in 1976. A plaque shows
that the cannon was constructed to commemorate the
country's bicentennial by Ron Sandy, Jesse Sandy and
Larry
McClain. Doug Carpenter then rebuilt it in 1984.
Photos also show that this was the "mystery
cannon" used at Camp Tuscazoar in 1984 as a
replacement for the missing McKinley cannon during
summer camp. Our thanks to Troop 90 for their
donation. This should make flag retreat ceremonies a
lot more interesting!

Memberships vital for camp
support!
For more than 20 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
