Annual Pig Roast
Fund-raiser scheduled for Sept. 13 & 14
Our 19th Annual Pig Roast weekend is coming up soon and we are
looking forward to great weather and great attendance. This event
is one of our biggest fundraisers for the camp and helps to raise
the necessary funds to allow us to keep our camping fees
affordable.
The menu will feature our delicious roast pork, chicken, baked
potato, green beans, rolls, butter, beverages and, of course,
homemade desserts (including our famous PIG cookies).
The serving hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m
on Sunday. Ticket prices will remain the same as in the past: $10
for adults and $4 for children in the presale or $12 and $5 at the
door.
“Dulcimers and Such” will perform on Saturday and will have
everyone singing along. Norm Saeger’s group “Friends” will
entertain us on Sunday. Don’t miss this wonderful weekend and
enjoy a memorable walk through the hills of Tuscazoar. Tickets are
currently available from any Foundation member or by calling the
camp at 330-859-2288 or Nancy Schoenbaum at 330/493-1386. There is
a savings if you purchase your tickets in advance, so be sure to
call us.
This year’s event will also feature a “quilt” raffle with a
beautiful “Autumn Leaves” quilt to be auctioned off during the
event. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Pig Roast for $1.00
each or 6 for $5.00. Tickets can also be purchased by calling
either the camp or Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386. The winner
does not need to be present and the winning name will be drawn at
the end of the Pig Roast on Sunday afternoon.
Pig Gig returns Sept.
12-14
Our Pig Gig Campout is returning this year for
groups who want to camp during the Pig Roast weekend. The event
will feature an interesting take on the “Amazing Race” where a
group will be able to win a FREE weekend campout at Tuscazoar. The
day’s activities will conclude with an 8 p.m. campfire program at
the Hoover Lodge amphitheater, where the hills will come alive
with songs and stories. The activity fee for the weekend will
include a Pig Roast dinner on Saturday night. Sites are still
available and we recommend you make your reservations soon. Give
the camp a call at 330-859-2288.

Calendar time again
The 2009 edition
of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation Calendar of Events is currently in
the works. Any business interested in support this endeavor can
contact the camp and information regarding advertising will be sent
out. This is a wonderful opportunity to support the camp and
advertise your business, which could result in many additional
contacts. We are also offering troops and/or districts with events
scheduled at the camp next year to have them listed on the calendar
for a small fee of $5. Let other groups know when you will be
camping or when the district event is planned. This edition of the
calendar will be ready in mid-December.
One further note: if you have a special picture featuring
your troop at the camp, we are currently looking for a photo to be
used on the top of the calendar. If you have a great photo, please
email it to:
nancyschoenbaum@sbcglobal.net. Maybe we can find a real jewel to
grace the front of the calendar.

Dulcimers ‘n Such to perform Saturday, Sept.
13 at
Pig Roast
Dulcimers ‘n Such will return to
entertain our guests during the Pig Roast on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Dulcimers ‘n Such is a musical group that plays a variety of
instruments. Most of the performers play the mountain dulcimer
(also known as the Appalachian or lap dulcimer). This is one of
two truly American instruments, the other being the five-string
banjo. The “n Such” in the group name includes guitars,
autoharp, harmonica, kalimba, banjimer, washtub bass,
tambourine, spoons and an occasional mandolin, dobro, accordion
and limberjack. The group plays a mix of music, including
Appalachian, old-time and Celtic music, with a helping of hymns
and traditional tunes thrown in.

Camp Tuscazoar memories
Thoughts of Pipestone, Old Campsite and
Biltmore sticks
By Glenn Eichel - Cushing, Maine
I sure have fond memories of Tuscazoar. The Friday night I
got my first Pipestone is etched in my brain. Pipestone
kept me coming back and advancing in rank. It was the
motivation for me.
I can still remember leaving Tuscazoar as a camper for the
last time in 1964. I was always sad leaving after summer
camp but that year I was especially sad. I knew I was at
an end. I visited Friday nights for a few years before
being lured to Camp Buckeye. I was asked to serve on the
Tuscazoar summer staff after I graduated, but I needed to
earn more money for college. If I could go back in time
I'd have made a different choice. Soon I was off and away
living in southwestern Ohio.
My mother passed away in 2000 and while we were closing up
her house I took some time to visit all the places that
had been my boyhood years. I took my daughter with me for
an afternoon visit at Tuscazoar. I walked to Keppler
Lodge, back to Jamboree (called the nature cabin when I
was there) and through central camp to Old Campsite where
Troop 85 always camped in the summer. I looked through the
new museum window and saw bricks for a few friends. As I
left I knew I was probably never going to return since my
mom was my last tie to the area. Many memories came
flooding back that afternoon.
Like the Friday afternoon that the whole troop gathered at
the pool to cheer on a buddy who need to swim that one lap
to qualify for his Pipestone. Most of us were great
swimmers, nearly half the troop was on the local YMCA swim
team (two would later become university swim coaches), so
we wanted everybody to get over the hump. That same summer
a bunch of us took Forestry merit badge and had a two-day
"sword fight" with the Biltmore sticks until the troop
leader, Paul Redinger, confiscated them.
I believe it was my second or third year at summer camp.
There was an afternoon skills contest. Bob Redinger and I
teamed up and won all but one of the events (finished
second in that one). I can still remember dinner that
night when they announced the winners. I was lucky to be
teamed with a super scout!. I still remember him teaching
me how to throw a half-hitch over a post for one contest.
Troop 85 always scheduled a winter camp at Keppler Lodge.
Homer Keppler was from Dover and affiliated with troop 85
at one time. I can still recall the joy of jumping on a
sled at Hoover, sledding all the way to Keppler, turning
left into the woods and dodging trees going toward the
wilderness camp. Looking back, I'm surprised we lived!
Thanks to all of you for keeping the spirit alive. If I’m
ever in the area again, I will make it out. |

Annual Membership Drive Underway!
For 20 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
