Sunday hours expanded for upcoming Pig Roast fund-raiser
Camp Tuscazoar’s biggest fund-raiser, the
annual Pig Roast, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 from 3 to
6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 14 from 12 to 5 p.m. The expanded
Sunday hours offer an opportunity for guests join us for lunch or
dinner (or maybe both!).
Once again, the taste-tempting menu will include roast pork,
barbecued chicken, green beans, applesauce, baked potatoes, rolls
and butter, beverage, and homemade desserts in the dining hall.
Transportation will be provided to and from the parking lot.
As always, the Pig Roast is open to the public. “That Cowboy Thang”
will provide musical entertainment on Saturday. On Sunday,
Crossroads will perform country and top-40 favorites.
Proceeds fund repairs, maintenance and equipment purchases. They
also help with the rising costs of electricity, trash removal,
propane, supplies and other operating expenses. Our goal has
always been to keep usage fees affordable, and your continuing
support at the Pig Roast fund-raiser is a vital part of this
effort.
Advance ticket prices remain $10 for adults and $4 for children, or
$12 and $5 at the door. For tickets, call 330-493-1386 or
330-859-2288 or contact a member of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation.

Camp Tuscazoar events calendar to return in ‘04
Did you notice that empty space on
your wall this year? Unfortunately, we were not able to produce a
camp events calendar for 2003. But take heart! The calendar will
return in 2004.
We are now seeking advertisements from local organizations
and businesses to support this project. Blocks are available
starting at $65 and you can buy as many blocks as you need. The
calendar offers a great way to reach more than 800 homes throughout
Stark, Tuscarawas, Summit, Wayne and other area counties for the
next year. Your financial support of the calendar may also be tax
deductible (please consult your tax advisor for details). Most
importantly, your contribution will help support “Ohio’s Most
Historic Camp”. If your organization would like to advertise in the
2004 calendar, please contact the camp at 330-859-2288.

Ride-A-Thon comin’
The equestrians (people on horses) you’ve
seen riding around camp have found a way to help “keep the spirit
burning”. Brenda Montandon, President of the Buckeye Trail Riders,
has organized a Ride-A-Thon fund-raiser to benefit Camp Tuscazoar.
Her club is sponsoring the event and Ohio Horseman’s Council and
Tri-County Trail Association have been invited to participate also.
On Sept. 6 and 7, their horses and trailer rigs will hopefully be
as thick as tents. Riders will bring in pledge sheets with
donations. All the donations will be tallied and turned in that day.
They’ve already collected over $400 in funds.
The camp will be closed Sept. 6 and 7 to visitors and hikers. They
will be riding all around camp, in both organized and solo rides.
Dinners and campfires for the riders are also being planned.
This is the same group that is blazing bridle trails with blue and
orange ribbons throughout camp. We thank them for their generosity!
Join tour to Oglebay Christmas Lights
Camp Tuscazoar is sponsoring a bus tour
to the Oglebay Park Christmas Lights. The display was started in
1985 at Oglebay Park, located just north of Wheeling, WV, and uses
over one million lights in more than 50 displays.
The tour will depart on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 3 p.m. from the
camp parking lot, and will include a supper stop at MCL Cafeteria.
We will also have a tour guide on board the bus, which is being
provided by Fidelity Tours.
The cost is $20 per person, with the meal extra. We will accept
paid reservations for the first 47 people.
Looking for a special Christmas present? Gift certificates are
available. Want a fun outing for the entire family or just a couple?

Stone wall added
in central camp
In June, a crew led by Mike
Roberts and Dave Tschantz began replacing the old railroad
tie retaining wall in central camp with stone. Using the
large sandstone blocks already in camp, the crew completed
roughly half of the wall. Plans are being made to have
more stone brought in to finish the project.

Primitive Gathering offered unique display of primitive arts and
crafts
Did you bring your troop? Did you bring your dad? Were you in the
pictures taken for Field and Stream magazine next spring?
Camp Tuscazoar once again filled with more than 100 people making
bows from hickory and Osage orange staves, arrows from multi-flora
rose, and arrowheads from multi-colored flints. While some worked
on projects, others threw atlatl darts or tried their skill on the
3-D target trail.
A spirit of coming together to learn and do was evident as people
|
worked on their projects. We hope you’ll use
what you learned this year and maybe even bring your own
deerskin to scrape and brain tan next June! |

Future Eagles leave their mark at camp
Eagle Scout candidates can be proud of their work at camp.
An Eagle project is usually more challenging to find, plan, organize and
schedule than a simple service project. Thanks to the following Eagle
candidates, their families, fellow Scouts, friends, and those connected
with the Eagle rank process for completing these projects at camp:
• P. Ekama Tr. 84 - New Pioneer Point trail and cleanup of
the Point area
• J. Moore Tr. 18 - Latrine siding at Hoover and Central
Camp
• M. Swisher Tr. 942 - Painted the Maintenance Building
and repaired and replaced the whole roof
• A. Hensley Tr. 20 – Rebuilt the latrine and bulletin
board and cleared the woods at Wilderness campsite
• D. Szabo Tr. 16 – Scanned and organized hundreds of camp
photos
• D. Schrader Jr. Tr. 18 – Sided the Keppler latrine and
constructed a bulletin board
• B. Desyn Tr. 91 – Cleared and marked the southern half
of Icky’s Trail and installed a bulletin board at roost
• J. Lipford Tr. 18 - Removed earth from the uphill side
of Jamboree Lodge and landscaped the area
Also, special thanks to those who provided skills and
materials to assist these young men. Projects currently underway will be
announced when completed. Photos of the different projects will be
available on the camp website.
Camp may produce maple syrup to raise funds
The Foundation is exploring the possibility of
producing and selling maple syrup to raise needed funds for the camp. If
you have any experience in maple syrup production, or if you would be
willing to assist in this venture, please let us know. Assistance will
especially be needed during the sap runs in late winter/early spring.
Watch for more news in future issues of the Breeze. |

Project preserves historic photos
Drew Szabo of Canton’s Troop 16,
along with several helpers, scanned hundreds of historic
Tuscazoar photos into digital files. The project was completed
in the Central Catholic High School computer lab, under the
supervision of Foundation director Brian Criswell and Drew’s
teacher and former Tuscazoar staffer, Kevin Powell. One of
Drew’s helpers was Eve, a young lady from Ireland visiting for
a month. She gave up one of her few free days to help Drew
with his project. Thanks to Drew and his team for a job well
done!

Photo shows scouts, bridge in 1921
This photo, believed to be taken in 1921, shows scouts
at the Zoarville Station before their hike into camp. Behind the
scouts stands the Zoarville Station Bridge. The photo was discovered
in an album donated by W.C. “Cece” Moorhead. Former Tuscazoar
staffer Fred Gray researched the date of the photo and provided the
following information, based on a talk by longtime scouter Bernie
Myers and from a camp brochure written by Charlie Mills in 1922:
"In those days, Scouts couldn't afford elaborate equipment. Most
boys saved for months in order to purchase a complete "official
Scout Uniform" for $5.50, which included the campaign hat. Their
equipment consisted of a "regular horseshoe roll pack." In his 1922
brochure, Charlie Mills described the horsehoe roll pack. "Blankets,
a bed tick for straw, extra underwear, all laid flat on a half pup
tent and rolled into a horseshoe, leaves your whole knapsack empty
for your extras such as soap, comb, toothbrush, towels,
handkerchiefs, pair of shoes, camera, and what else you need outside
of your swimming tights."
The latest Camp Tuscazoar clatter
We continue to receive requests to
present the Tuscazoar slide show at group events. This
20-minute program traces the history of Camp Tuscazoar and includes
dozens of historical photos. If your group is interested in seeing
this presentation, please contact the camp well in advance to make
arrangements. A donation for this free showing would be appreciated
to help cover our costs.
We need refrigerators or stoves for our buildings. The
Foundation has always been able to provide working refrigerators and
stoves for our campers, thanks to the generosity of our members and
friends. If you have a new or used refrigerator or stove in good
condition and would like to donate it to the camp, please let us
know.

Annual Membership Drive Underway!
For more than 15 years, the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has kept the camp we love open and operating. We are not supported by the Boy Scouts, the United Way or any other organization or corporation. Our funding must come from camping fees, fund-raisers, donations and memberships. Memberships start at only $15 per person, but are vital for supporting the camp. Our members provide guidance on future projects and activities, help with workdays, serve on committees and are eligible
for camping privileges. The CTF
is an Ohio public
benefit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for
future generations. Please join us. Camp Tuscazoar needs your
help!
