Dover Dam Weekend will offer "out of this world" fun May 5-7
What
do you get when you combine a mystery, tours of Dover Dam, hikes, games, an entertaining
campfire program and a delicious meal? You get one of the most popular weekends of the
year at Camp Tuscazoar!
Bring your group down for the fun May 5-7. Chairman Bob Spencer isn't
giving out many clues, but he has promised an "out of this world" mystery and a
good time for all. He also mentioned that the campfire program will be like none you've
ever experienced at Tuscazoar. No special equipment will be be needed this year. But you
certainly don't want to miss a plate piled high with Bob's spaghetti after the day's
events.
The cost is $6 per person which includes lunch and dinner on Saturday
and an event patch. Camping fees are additional.
Check-in for campers will begin on Friday evening. Day-only attendees
can register Saturday morning at Duryee Lodge. The events begin Saturday morning after an
opening flag-raising.
Museum "Eagle walk" to expand; camp entrance
sign now on display
Ongoing demand for "Eagle"
bricks will mean an expansion of the Eagle walk at the W.C. Moorhead Museum. In the coming
weeks, the walk will double in size to accommodate the many bricks that have been ordered
since the walk was established in 1996.
For a contribution of $25, you can still purchase one or more bricks to
honor a friend, relative or departed loved-one that achieved the rank of Eagle scout.
Simply complete the form on Page 3 and send it to the camp, along with your check.
Also, the large wooden sign that hung outside the camp entrance for
decades has been returned to the camp and is now on display in the museum. Scouts who
attended Tuscazoar in the 1960's, 70's and 80's will no doubt remember this sign that
greeted new arrivals at the top of the hill.
A personal computer has been added to the museum with a copy of the
Camp Tuscazoar Foundation website. Through this PC, visitors that do not have access to a
computer or the internet can browse through the camp website.
Stop by the museum during your next trip to camp. The displays are
always changing. Who knows what will appear next week? or call (330) 859-2288. |

Relive memories at
the Tuscazoar reunion/open house, Aug. 27
| To the skies, to the trees to everything in the
wilderness. To the cooks, to the eats, to the food that is always prepared for us. To our
friends, to our pals, to those who brought us happiness. To the chief, to the men, to
those who have always stood by. Ooooh....sing
a song to Tuscazoar! |
Camp
Tuscazoar will host its third reunion/open house for campers, scouters and staff on
Sunday, August 27 from 1 to 8 p.m. Visitors can tour the camp to plan future hiking or
camping trips, visit the W. Cecil Moorhead Museum, and view other projects completed or
underway at camp. No official program is planned, just a day of reflection and
story-swapping. The event will include a wiener roast for a modest $1 donation.

Please pass the word to all former Camp Tuscazoar alumni you know and invite them to
attend.
Plans underway for Pig Weekend, Sept. 15-17
Ted
Novak and his crack team of volunteers are already making plans for the camp's Pig Gig
campout and Pig Roast fund-raiser in September. And, cabins and campsites are certain to
fill quickly. The delicious meals, the (usually) pleasant fall weather and the challenging
activities have made this weekend a "must" for many area groups' event
calendars.
Why not make your plans for the Pig Gig while you're at camp for Dover
Dam Weekend? This would be an ideal time to choose a campsite. More detailed plans for the
weekend will be announced in the next issue of the Breeze. |

"From ...the Ranger's Stump"
by Rangers Dana and Paula Powers
SALUTATIONS. Our esteemed Breeze editor asked me to write an article from our viewpoint as
Rangers - Paula (my lovn wife of 21 years) and myself (a scouter since 68). I
liked the idea, but what do I say? I asked a few people and most said, "What
questions do you get asked? Use those to start." So well build From
the Rangers Stump on my life: my concerns,
comments, questions about the camp and news from the woods here.
Spring has just come to Camp Tuscazoar. We are leaving one
beautiful season and entering another. The plant life and some of the animal life have
been asleep under a veneer of discarded leaves. Tuscazoar shows its vertically enhanced
topography unencumbered by the green canopy of leaves, millions of mosquitoes, or the
colors of the other plant life seen in different seasons. One thing we see right away in
this season is the footsteps of man (men, women, boys and girls). See the pop bottle
behind the tree? Or that candy wrapper protruding from under the leaves? If you see items
like these, please take them with you. Our raccoon maintenance crew has enough to deal
with.
"I need a good turn project, a service project, an Eagle project,
etc." Camp Tuscazoar has 16 trustees and a small group of volunteers working to keep
the camp functioning. YOUR PROJECTS are important! We are not supported by the Boy Scouts
of America, the United Way, the YMCA or any religious institution. Your projects are our
sponsors, just as much as the campers are. We have received grants and gifts for projects,
which are Greatly appreciated. Projects?
Yes! We have projects that could last from
½ hour to all weekend, for participants ages from 7 to 77
and older? We have
projects that are simple or complex in nature. A project is here for you whether
youre disabled, an athlete, or in the middle like me. Contact me, Paula or officer
of the foundation and well all work together to "Keep the Spirit Burning".
Well, thanks for reading and please give me some ideas for future
columns. Ask questions, make comments and voice your concerns either in person, via the
mail to the camp address, via our website or the telephone. In the words of Red Skelton
"May God Bless".
On the trail. Dana |

| Icky's Point of Interest

Dover Dam
Constructed in 1936, Dover Dam was one of a series
of dams built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy
District. The dam protects thousands of acres of crop land from flooding. Dover Dams
construction forced the relocation of many of Camp Tuscazoars original buildings
because they were in the dams flood plain or in the path of the relocated railroad.
Please use caution near the dam. |

Help support Comp Tuscazoar
Camp Tuscazoar needs computer related items to bring camp operations up-to-date.
Our goal is to outfit our museum with a decent computer terminal for use by visitors and
to provide modern computing ability for general CTF operations. Donation of the items
below is really needed! If youve got a box of old boards and drives, we can probably
use some of it. Were not picky and can assemble the parts if we get them.
| · Windows 95 Operating System Software - full
version we can register or transfer |
| · Computer motherboard and/or processor of at
least classic Pentium build, w/ or w/o case |
| · IDE hard disk drive(s) of near 1 GB capacity or
more |
| · CD-ROM drive (even slow ones) |
| · RAM memory of any type |
| · SVGA monitor w/ or w/o a good video card, ISA or
PCI |
| · Computer desk or cubicle workstation furniture |
| · Decent workstation chair |
| · Computer paper (tractor feed), media, software,
power strips, etc. |
Donated items remain CTF property unless we can trade up. Pick up of donations can be
arranged. Please call 330-859-2288 and leave a message or email CTF Webmaster Brian
Criswell at
info@tuscazoar.org.

 A
firebuilding test usually helps keep participants warm on the Gold Rush trail. Most groups
passed the test. A couple had roaring fires in five minutes. And a few groups learned
they're not quite ready for a trip to the arctic. We'll see what they learned next year.

The
challenge and the chili:
Y2K Gold Rush a big successWas it the
weather? Cabin fever? Bob Spencer's chili? Whatever the reason, one of the largest groups
of participants in the history of the Gold Rush turned out for this year's competition in
February. So many came, we used up all the patches!
The competitors were challenged at every city. Firebuilding, lassoing,
orienteering, snowshoes, and even a logic problem were encountered along the trail. At
each city, clues were dispensed for the lost city. Most were clever enough to figure out
that the scripture verse clues pinpointed the city's location at Tom's Chapel.
The weather couldn't have been better. The ground was snow-covered,
which proved ideal for pushing sleds from site to site. But the sun shone most of the day,
helping to keep frostbite away from fingers and toes. And, a salute to our competitors for
dressing properly for the snow and cold. Heavy coats, hats, gloves, boots and the
occasional Carhart were the order of the day.
This year, a hot meal for both lunch and dinner helped keep bodies warm
and energy levels high. Bobs gang of volunteers worked throughout the day to make
sure everyone got fed at mealtime. The chili was fantastic, as always. Thanks to all the
volunteers and the participants for another successful Tuscazoar Gold Rush. Let's do
it again next year!

After Saturday's competition has concluded, sledriding
is always a popular way for Gold Rush campers to unwind
