Annual Gold Rush competition scheduled for February 11-13Camp Tuscazoar will kick off its first event of the 21st
century on February 11-13, hosting the annual Gold Rush weekend. We still have openings,
so get your organization registered right away.
The winter competition will begin with a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. on
Saturday, Feb. 12. Competing units will hit the trails at 9:30. The competition will
conclude at 4 p.m.
Competitors will be divided into three categories based on the unit's
average age. Trophies will be presented to the top three finishers in each category at an
evening awards ceremony in Kimble Hall.
Event chairman Harry Wood won't reveal any specifics, but hinted that
competitors will face a mix of traditional and nontraditional challenges along the trails,
with an emphasis on fun and games. Units should bring the usual gear, including rope,
compass, a pencil and paper. Most importantly, prepare properly for the winter weather.
Snow, ice, and cold are typical for this event.
A unit leader's meeting will be held Friday at 9 p.m., followed by an adult
leader's cracker-barrel at 10 p.m. A church service is planned for Sunday morning at 9:30
a.m. in Tom's Chapel. The W. C. Moorhead Museum and Trading Post will be open Saturday.
The participation fee
is $6.00 per person, which includes a hot lunch at Johnny Appleseed campsite, a chili
dinner, and an event patch. Camping fees are additional.
Check-in for campers will begin on Friday evening, February 11 at the W. C.
Moorhead Museum. Units need not camp to compete, but must register in advance.
If your group is planning to participate, please contact the camp as soon as
possible. For more information, visit http://www.tuscazoar.org/2000grpage.htm or
call (330) 859-2288. |
The annual Gold Rush event, set in the heart of Tuscazoar's
winter woods, always provides a challenge to participants. |

Fall activities jump-start annual camping season
Camp Tuscazoar's fall events offered
outdoor fun for visitors of all ages.
The camp's second reunion, in August, saw many visitors returning to
Tuscazoar for the first time since their Scouting days.
Participants in the Pig Gig's orientation trail learned what they knew (or
didn't know) about compass use. At the evening campfire, the Pangroove Steel Drum Band
provided a refreshingly different show.
Hundreds enjoyed a delicious meal and the music of Crossroads at the Pig
Roast. The weather was great. The food was even better!
As always, Enchanted Tuscazoar drew a crowd of kids eager to meet
Tuscazoar's friendly wildlife.
A hearty "THANK YOU" to every person and organization that donated
time, money and items to make these events possible. |

Tuscazoar?
Check out our 2000 eventsThe
new millennium swept through Camp Tuscazoar without fanfare. The Y2K bug had no impact on
the skies, the trees or anything else here in our wilderness. Camp Tuscazoar will continue
to offer the same outdoor adventure and education in this millennium as it did in the last
one.
So how will you spend your time in the year 2000? Why not have you and your
organization join us at the activities we've got planned? In this 21st century, with its
Internet, video games, e-mail, DVD, cell phones and surround-sound, perhaps nothing could
be better for kids than time spent at Tuscazoar, hiking the trails, identifying plants and
trees, studying the stars, building campfires, learning to cook, and all the other
experiences our events offer. Plan to be here for these events:

May 5-7Dover
Dam Weekend mystery returns
By popular demand, the mystery contest will return at Dover Dam
Weekend 2000, May 5-7. Last year, our young detectives gathered clues along Icky's Trail
to solve the puzzle. What will this year's contest bring? Come and see!
No Dover Dam Weekend would be complete without tours of the dam itself, and
chairman Bob Spencer is planning other entertaining activities as well. A spaghetti dinner
and a campfire program at Hoover Lodge Amphitheater will wrap up the day's events.
The cost is $6 per person which includes two meals and an event patch.
Camping fees are additional.
Spring is coming. Sign up soon for this fun-filled event. |

| More dollars pledged for bridge restorationTwo more area organizations have stepped
forward to support the restoration of the Zoarville Station Bridge at Camp Tuscazoar. The
Rosenberry Foundation in New Philadelphia and the Haman Foundation of Dover recently made
contributions.
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation thanks all those that have agreed to fund a
portion of this initiative. They include:
Ohio-Erie Canal Association |
Rosenberry Foundation |
Frease Foundation (2 contributions) |
Wayne Mutual Insurance Company |
Ohio to Erie Trail, Inc. |
Stark-Tusc-Wayne Joint Solid
Waste District |
Sandy Township |
Ohio Department of Transportation |
Ohio General Assembly |
Haman Family Foundation |
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their ranger, Stan
Rosenblatt, and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) deserve special recognition
for their support.
The Zoarville Station Bridge is the only known bridge that uses designer
Albert Fink's "through truss" design. The bridge was used extensively by Scouts
hiking from camp to Zoar. Once restored, the bridge will serve as a key crossing point for
the Zoar Valley Trail, Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail.
The bridge is scheduled to be disassembled this spring. While the bridge is
being renovated, the abutments and access roadways will be raised. A tentative
reconstruction is planned for the spring of 2002, with a summer dedication ceremony to
follow. Watch for further updates in the Breeze.

Icky's Point of Interest

Hoover Lodge
Hoover
Lodge surpassed its 50th anniversary at Camp Tuscazoar in 1999. Originally designed to
serve as a training center, Hoover Lodge and its adjacent amphitheater were dedicated in
June of 1949. The grass area east of the lodge is referred to as Hoover Field. The largest
lodge at Camp Tuscazoar, Hoover Lodge was named after Frank G. Hoover, a North Canton
industrialist who donated the funds for the lodge and whose contributions to Camp
Tuscazoar and area scouting are unequaled. The lodges roof was renovated with a
grant from the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation in 1993. Hoover Lodge also stands on the site
of the first Pipestone Camp Honors ceremony. A brass plaque in the lodge's floor marks the
location. |

Duryee Lodge gets a new roof. |
New water lines are run through the parade grounds. |
New camp water lines installed;
work continues on Duryee Lodge Those
returning to Tuscazoar for winter camping trips or day hikes will find new water lines
laid throughout camp. Frost-free faucets have been installed in central locations, and
lines have also been installed between the pump house and the reservoir. As a result,
water flow is now a uniform pressure throughout the camp, and water system leaks and
breaks that long plagued the camp have been eliminated. The new system will significantly
improve water distribution throughout camp. A dry hydrant has also been installed in
central camp for use in case of fire. A special thank you to Larkin Contractors for
completing this much-needed project.
Duryee Lodge, which was constructed in 1957, is getting a new look. The old roof has
been stripped off and a new roof with a much steeper slope has been added. As a result,
drainage will be improved, reducing the potential for rot. Likewise, the cabin's windows
have been replaced by new energy-efficient windows to help keep the lodge more comfortable
in the winter months. The walls are being insulated, and the sleeping quarters are being
expanded for the comfort of our weekend campmasters. Other interior improvements are
planned as well. Thanks to the crew of Neil Rupe, Scott Perez, Don Selby, Jay Ohliger and
Dick Matheny for leading this project and several others this past year. |
