Camp Tuscazoar Breeze
February 1999
Vol. 10, Number 1
"Native American games" will add new twist to Gold Rush
The Erie, the Delaware, the Tuscarawas, the Mohican: these
Native Americans all lived in Ohio at one point in our history. They camped along the
banks of the Tuscarawas River, searched for food in the valley's cold winter snows and, of
course, they played games to keep warm and to sharpen their skills.
This years Gold Rush Competition Feb. 12-14 will
include several games played by Native Americans. And, be warned, these games arent
always as simple as they appear. Competing units will be judged on their ability to
perform the outdoor games and tasks, along with their leadership, teamwork and spirit.
Here are the event requirements. Patrol names must reflect
Native American culture. Patrols must be made up of from 5 to 7 Scouts. Patrols must bring
the following items: a first aid kit; at least two neckerchiefs; a six-foot long piece of
light twine; and a coup stick at least five feet long (a small straight sapling will work
very well but trees may not be cut at camp). The coup stick can be decorated, if the
patrol chooses.
Age divisions will break down into four groups: Adults age
18 & up (non-competing); Senior Scouts ages 15 to 17; Junior Scouts ages 11 to 14; and
Cubs / Webelos - under age 11.
The participation fee is $6.00 per person, which includes
lunch on Saturday, and an event patch. Camping fees are additional. Please prepare
properly for the winter weather.
The weekend schedule will include a Leaders Cracker
Barrel on Friday night, the "NATIVE AMERICAN GAMES" competition on Saturday, a
campfire Saturday night, and Sunday church services in Toms Chapel, weather
permitting. The W. C. Moorhead Museum and Trading Post will be open on Saturday.
Units need not camp to compete, but must register in
advance. If your group is planning to participate, please contact the camp as soon as
possible so we can plan our meal. We look forward to seeing you and extend an invitation
to other family members to join us Saturday for the fun!
For more information, call (330) 859-2288 or event chairman
Don Selby at 330-477-5085.
Icky's Items of Interest:
The furnace in Hoover Lodge has been relocated to
the main room. This should significantly improve the heat in this popular lodge during the
winter months.
The camp's water pump was repaired and reassembled.
New brushes were installed and the pump motor was overhauled. As far as we know, this is
the first maintenance to this pump in 20 years.
A local troop will be building a Webelos crossover site
near White Eyes campsite. If your unit would like to use this site when complete, please
contact the camp.
A new wood burning stove has been installed in Keppler
Lodge, and the building has been completely rewired.
Be sure to visit the camp's website at www.tuscazoar.org
for the latest event news, photo contest, Zoarville Station Bridge updates and lots of
other information.

The mystery deepens at Dover Dam Weekend
If you thought last year's Dover Dam Weekend was a mystery,
then you'll really be puzzled at this year's event, scheduled for May 7-9 at camp. Last
year, campers scattered throughout Tuscazoar to gather pieces of Icky's stolen headdress
and, despite almost constant rain, several groups of young sleuths met the challenge.
Once again, Chairman Bob Spencer is cooking up and
ingenious puzzle that only the most creative, thoughtful, and tenacious campers will be
able to solve.
We have been able to gather clues about a couple of the
events. As always, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates Dover Dam, will open
the dam and conduct tours. Also, we've managed to learn that the climbing wall will make a
return appearance, weather permitting. And, as in past years, Saturday's events will
conclude with a campfire at Hoover Lodge Amphitheater.
The cost is $6 per person which includes a spaghetti feast
(with meatballs) for dinner and an event patch. Camping fees are additional.
Check-in for campers will begin on Friday evening. Day-only
attendees can register Saturday morning at Duryee Lodge. The events begin Saturday morning
after an opening flag-raising.
It doesn't seem like it now, but Spring will soon be here,
so reserve your campsite soon for this challenging event.
If we can uncover any more details, we'll pass them along
to you in the next issue of the Breeze.

Comments from the President
Wanted: tools, workers for camp projects
We are one year away from the 80th anniversary of Camp
Tuscazoar and this year we hope to significantly improve our camp.
Camp Tuscazoar needs of a lot of "tender loving
care" that the Foundation's board of trustees cannot provide entirely by themselves.
We are asking our members and those that use the camp to step forward and help provide the
care the camp needs.
In the coming year, please plan to spend four or five hours
doing either general service projects or helping with any of the planned construction
projects. Some tools and materials can be provided, but items such as chain saws, mauls,
wedges, and post hole diggers will have to be brought to camp. An inventory of camp tools
and materials will be made in the next several weeks, which will give us a better idea of
what additional items we may need.
During the summer, save building materials such as
concrete, mortar (full bags), lumber, fence posts (treated), OSB and T-111 panels left
over from home projects. If your friends or relatives have items that could be used,
please ask to have them donated.
If you know of any work that needs to be done in camp,
please let someone know so it can be added to our list.
Let's make it a year to remember!

Ambitious improvement projects planned for '99
If you have a few hours to donate on weekends, we have a
job for you. Our plans are ambitious, but with enough willing hands, these projects can be
accomplished. You do not need to be a skilled tradesman to help. We have skilled people
ready to assist you. Below is the work list for the coming year.
New roofs for Jamboree, Duryee, Tool Shed
Remodel Duryee Lodge
Build two new shower facilities
Install new water and electric lines
Build fire tool sheds
Build storage rack on the tool shed
Other repairs as needed
Campmasters needed for weekends
The '98-'99 camping season is underway at Camp Tuscazoar,
and it's offering you a chance to get away from the big city and spend a quiet weekend
away from it all. The Tuscazoar Campmaster Program offers volunteers 21 years of age and
older an opportunity to camp at Tuscazoar (in Duryee Lodge or in a tent) for a weekend at
no charge. Campmasters assist the Ranger in overseeing the camp, including check-in and
checkout activities. If you would like to join our outstanding corps of Campmasters,
please complete and return the form below. For more information, contact Neil Rupe at
330-339-5951.

Icky's Point of Interest

|
|
Buzzard's Roost
|
Ickys Trail ends at Buzzards Roost, a rocky
outcropping that once served as a lookout for area Native Americans. There, hundreds of
feet above the Tuscarawas River, one can view Dover Dam directly below, observe the
hillsides far across the river valley, and watch as the Tuscarawas River flows toward New
Philadelphia, Gnadenhutten and on to the Muskingum River. This lofty pinnacle received its
name from the buzzards that occasionally alight on the rocks. At one time, Buzzards
Roost was also known as Posts Point, in honor of Frederick Post, a Moravian
missionary who visited the Tuscarawas River valley in the mid-1700's. |
Lend a hand at annual events, activities
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation always needs volunteers to
help staff our events during the year. No special skills are required except the desire to
contribute a little time to the youth that attend our events. A list of the upcoming
events is shown below, so pick as many as you wish and make plans to help out. For
information, contact the camp at 330-859-2288 or Don Selby at 330-477-5085.
Membership Offers Camp Use Privileges
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation is always seeking new members,
and we encourage you to join our efforts to preserve and improve our camp. Membership in
the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation (CTF) offers more than just an opportunity to support our
camp financially. Those who are members in good standing can also camp at Tuscazoar during
the off-season, June 1 to August 31. Both cabins and tent sites can be reserved at the
camp's standard camping rate for Foundation members and their immediate family. For full
details, consult the Foundation's camping policies. The CTF is an Ohio nonprofit
corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for future generations of youth. Please
consider becoming a member of the Foundation. Camp Tuscazoar needs your help!
