Second annual Tuscazoar reunion/ open house planned for Aug. 22

Come and be with us once again! Camp Tuscazoar's second reunion and open house is scheduled for Sunday, August 22. Former Tuscazoar campers are invited to return and walk the trails again, and to share their stories and knowledge of our camp's history. We especially encourage members of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation to attend. Last year, several former camp staff members returned to camp and shared stories of summers spent in Tuscazoar's hills. Also, groups can tour the camp to plan future hiking or camping trips. Or, if you have an item you would like to donate to the W.C. Moorhead museum, this would be an excellent opportunity to bring it to camp. The museum will be open throughout the day. And yes, food will be served. The camp's gates will open at 1 p.m. and will close around 8 p.m. There is no charge for this event and no formal events are planned. Tell a friend and bring many. If you are bringing a large group, please call 330-859-2288 or 330-477-5085 in advance to let us know how many are coming so that we can prepare enough food. Join us!

ODOT Grant Will Fund Most Of Bridge Restoration Project

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has awarded a major grant to help fund the restoration of the Zoarville Station (Fink Truss) Bridge. The grant covers 80% of the costs for removing, restoring and re-erecting the bridge, and the costs of raising the approaches and the bridge abutments to minimize exposure to flooding. Restoration is tentatively scheduled for completion in 2001.

"We are extremely pleased with ODOT's contribution to help preserve this historic structure," said David Tschantz, project manager for the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation. "The restored bridge will be a popular hiking destination for camp visitors and another point of interest in the Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor."

The Zoarville Station Bridge, located just north of Camp Tuscazoar, is the only known bridge in existence that uses the "through truss" design developed by German designer Albert Fink. The bridge was constructed in the late 1860's near Dover and was moved to its present location in 1905. The Zoarville Station Bridge is now listed on National Register of Historic Places, the Ohio Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Engineering Record.

The aging bridge was donated to the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation in 1997. The Foundation also purchased three tracts of land from the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District linking the bridge to the camp. Once repairs are complete, the bridge will hikers on the Zoar Valley Trail and the Ohio to Erie Trail to cross the Connotton Creek.

Hikers found adventure at Dover Dam Weekend

They took to the woods by the hundreds at Dover Dam Weekend. Along the newly restored Icky's Trail hikers climbed hills and descended into valleys as they looped from central camp to Buzzard's Roost, down to the dam and back again. Along the trail, clues were provided to solve a special Tuscazoar mystery. Just when the trail seemed too long to continue, there was a table with hot dogs, potato chips and bug juice. Tours of Dover Dam were included, of course, as was a 24-foot high rappelling platform in Keppler field.

The rains held off until we gathered in the dining hall for an evening feast. And feast we did as spaghetti was ladled out generously. A spirited campfire closed the fun-filled day.

Thanks to Bob Spencer and his crew of talented volunteers for another magnificent weekend. We're looking forward to next year!

Pig Gig to feature orientation trail rally, steel drum band and food!

The 1999 Pig Gig Campout will be an event to remember! An orientation trail rally will test campers' ability to use a compass to reach their destination. A good compass and wristwatch with a second hand or stop watch is required. This course is sure to challenge participants of all ages.

At dinner, campers will feast on roast pork, green beans, baked potatoes, applesauce, rolls, a beverage and our famous pig cookies.

A camp-wide campfire program featuring the Pangroove Steel Drum Band from the University of Akron will conclude Saturday's events. You won't want to miss this special hour-long concert of great music at 8 p.m.!

Don't miss this challenging competition, delicious food and great music. Campsites are still available. The $6 per person fee include participation in all activities, a patch and the Pig Roast Dinner. Camping fees are additional. Call 859-2288 for reservations.

Enchanted Tuscazoar will offers glimpse at life in the forest

Long before the Scouts came, Tuscazoar was home to thousands of species of animals, birds and insects including whitetail deer, owls, foxes, mice, rabbits, gypsy moths and mosquitoes. Most continue to thrive in the hills of our camp.

On Sunday, Oct. 10, Enchanted Tuscazoar will give visitors an up-close look into the world of Tuscazoar's wildlife. This fun, non-scary activity for younger children begins with a short hike along one of Tuscazoar's many trails. En route, the hikers will encounter several animals, birds and insects (all volunteers in costume) who will tell a short tale of their life in the forest. This year, a swarm of ladybugs will join the cast of friendly critters.

Refreshments will be served following the walk in the camp dining hall. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Groups will be offered their choice of day and time.

Volunteers are needed for this event. To register, or to help out, please call Nancy Schoenbaum at 330-493-1386.

Jamboree Lodge and Ranger's house reroofed

We've made more improvements at camp. We recently renovated the Ranger's house from top to bottom. The well that serves this building will be repaired by the time this issue reaches you and work has begun on eliminating water seepage into the basement. On Saturday, July 16, the roof will come off of Duryee Lodge in preparation for renovation.

The Foundation expresses its sincerest THANK YOU to McCaulley Building for their generous donation of time and expertise in roofing Jamboree Lodge and the Ranger's house. Also, a heartfelt THANK YOU to Modern Building Supply for the generous discount they provided on the materials for these roofing projects. Without people like these companies, a lot less would have been accomplished this summer.

There is a misconception among some that our camp receives funds from organizations like the United Way, Hoover Foundation or similar groups. This is not the case. We must support the camp on camping fees, fund-raisers and an occasional grant or bequest and a lot of work by a group of people that, by the time this summer is over, will have spent several thousand hours working on camp projects.

If you would like to find out what is going on in camp, just stop in some weekend or even during the week while we are working (we would welcome the break).

We hope to see you in camp soon. Don't forget we have planned our second annual reunion and open house on August 22 for you, your family and your friends.

Don

First Central Camp Area

From the mid-1920s until the mid-1930s, Camp Tuscazoar’s central camp area sat in valley on either side of the Netawatwes Brook. When Frank Hoover purchased 65 acres for the Scouts in 1924, plans were made to erect permanent buildings. First, a mess hall was built below Pioneer Point. In 1925, Netawatwes Brook was dammed to form a swimming pool. Shortly thereafter, the Long Lodge administration building was donated by Frank Hoover and a commons was added on the hillside opposite the mess hall. We know this area today as Old Campsite. Other structures, such as a trading post (pictured above), were added in the years immediately following. However, the construction of Dover Dam and the relocation of the railroad forced the Council to move central camp to the area it occupies today. The dam’s construction and regrading for the railroad changed the face and character of the camp forever. Today, a sharp eye can spot foundations and other remnants of this bygone era.

Fall Membership Drive Underway!

The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation encourages everyone to join our efforts to preserve and improve our camp. Membership in the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation (CTF) enables you to support the camp financially. We do not receive funds from the United Way, governmental agencies or other organizations, except through occasional grants. Our annual budget is paid through donations, through monies raised at annual fund-raising events, through camp usage fees and through membership dues. We also need more members to assist in event weekends, as campmasters, and as helpers on work projects. The CTF is an Ohio nonprofit corporation dedicated to preserving Camp Tuscazoar for future generations of youth. Please become a member of the Foundation. Camp Tuscazoar needs your help!
