Camp Tuscazoar Breeze
August
1998
Vol. 9, Number 3
Good Food! Good Fun! It's our annual Pig Roast Fundraiser!
Sunday, Sept. 13. See Page 2.
Relive fond memories, swap stories at
Aug. 30 reunion
Your favorite campsite...was it Blackhawk,
Tall Trees or maybe Old campsite? How about those old campfire songs...like "The
Chief's Song, "Rise 'n' Shine, "The Happy Wanderer" or "Der Music
Concert". Do you remember taking a rock to Pioneer Point, climbing the
"face" of Buzzard's Roost, and getting your first Pipestone?
On Sunday, August 30, you can relive those
memories as the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation hosts its first annual reunion of Scouts,
Scouters and Staff of Camp Tuscazoar from 1 to 8 pm. All Camp Tuscazoar Foundation
members are invited as well. Bring your family along with your tales, photos and
mementos of the camp. See what's changed...and what's still exactly like you remember it.
There is no formal program, just fellowship
and a remembrance of times long (or not so long) past. But, we will have food: a wiener
roast with baked beans, coffee and bug juice.
If possible, we hope to install a replica
of the original fifth year Pipestone that was in the floor of Hoover Lodge. This plaque
marked the location of the first Pipestone ceremony. You could also use this opportunity
to visit the W. Cecil Moorhead Museum, check out the renovations at Troop 5 Cabin, hike to
the Zoarville Station (Fink Truss) Bridge or view the work underway to replace the
stockade.
Please, let us know if you are planning to
attend. Just fill out the form below and send it to: Don Selby, 166 Anna Ave. NW, Canton,
OH 44708 before August 25th. Please pass along this information and to print additional
copies for anyone you know who is a Camp Tuscazoar alumni or may just want to come along.
See you then!

Is this what central camp looked like the last time
you were at Tuscazoar (circa 1940)?
If so, you'll definitely want to attend our first reunion! |

Zoarville Station Bridge receives more support
The Donald W. Frease Foundation of Dover has awarded a
grant to the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation to support restoration of the Zoarville Station
(Fink Truss) Bridge. With this generous contribution, phase one of the bridge's
restoration is now fully funded. The next phase will be to develop a plan for, and request
for bids on, construction of the improved abutments and approaches, and requesting bids on
the bridge's razing, restoration and reconstruction. The Foundation is working closely
with the Tuscarawas County Commissioners, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District,
the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the Ohio-Erie Canal Corridor Coalition,
the Ohio Historical Society and other interested groups to complete this historically
significant project.
Annual Pig Gig Campout: Sept. 11-13
What a mix! Geology, volleyball, and pumpkins
The 1998 Pig Gig Campout will offer a wide
variety of activities for campers, including a volleyball tournament, Frisbee golf, and
the second annual Tuscazoar pumpkin-carving contest. A geologist will also be on hand to
lead activities to help scouts earn their Geology merit badge.
This annual campout, scheduled for Sept.
11-13, has become one of Camp Tuscazoar's most popular events, thanks in part to the
delicious pig roast meal served Saturday evening.
Once again this year, campers will be
served a hearty dinner of roast pork, green beans, baked potatoes, applesauce, rolls, a
beverage and our famous pig cookies.
A camp-wide campfire program at the Hoover
Lodge amphitheater will conclude Saturday's events.
Join us for the great food, thrilling
competition, and outstanding fall weather (we hope). Campsites are still available. The $6
per person fee include participation in all activities and the Pig Roast Dinner. Camping
fees are additional. Contact the camp ranger at 859-2288 for reservations.
Support Tuscazoar, and enjoy a delicious meal at the Pig Roast
On Sunday, September 13, Camp
Tuscazoar will host its annual Pig Roast fundraiser. From 3 to 6:30 p.m., visitors will
enjoy a tasty meal of roast pork, barbecued chicken, green beans, applesauce, baked
potatoes, rolls and butter, beverage, and homemade desserts. Meals will be served in the
camp dining hall, and transportation will be provided to and from the parking lot.
The food is always delicious,
and the benefit to Camp Tuscazoar is just as significant. This event is the Camp Tuscazoar
Foundation's most important fundraiser. Proceeds will be used throughout the coming year
to support repairs, maintenance, utilities, equipment purchases, and all of the other
expenses associated with operating our aging outdoor facilities. Please encourage your
family, friends, and fellow scouters to attend. With one taste of the food, they will
certainly be glad they came. And, for the advance cost of only $10 for adults and $4 for
children, they will provide much needed support for our camp. Prices will be slightly
higher at the door, so please encourage everyone to buy advance tickets.
As in previous years, diners
will be entertained by the music of Crossroads, a local band that specializes in country
and top 40 music. You'll also want to stop by the W.C. Moorhead Museum and check out the
historic photos, books, newspaper articles, uniforms and other items now on display. The
museum also serves as the camp trading post, so visitors can take home the latest camp
patches, shirts, hats and cassette tapes.
For tickets, please call
330-478-2511 or 330-859-2288 or contact a member of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation. See you
at Kimble Hall on September 13! Bibs are optional, but a strong appetite is highly
recommended.
Hitch up your sled for the Gold Rush
Competition
Despite our warm August weather, winter is not
far away. Plan now to attend our annual Gold Rush competition that brings back a hint of
those gold-seeking days in the Yukon. Snow or no snow, competitors will use their outdoor
skills to build fires, lash poles together, provide first aid, and complete other
challenging exercises. Cabins and campsites are still available. Watch for more details on
our website at www.tuscazoar.org.
'98 Dover Dam "Mystery" Weekend offered fun and
rain, rain, rain...
There was no mystery about why
we were wet at the 1998 Dover Dam "Mystery" Weekend. The rain fell from Friday
night until late in the day Saturday. But then, it usually is wet this time of year.
Spring in Ohio seems to know when we're going camping.
With a mystery to be solved,
our campers scoured the camp for solutions to clues, which led them to important
locations. These clues led them from Pioneer Point to Buzzard's Roost and from the Tunnel
to the Museum. At each location, the groups received an item that would, at the end of
their journey, become one of the components to Icky's headdress. Each patrol would put
their collection of items together in their own special creative way to make the best
headdress they could. And they sure did!!!
Once again Bob Spencer, his
loyal troop and many dedicated volunteers put together an exciting Tuscazoar event. We all
enjoyed the hot spaghetti dinner after a wet day on the trails. The meatballs were
awesome!!!
Thanks again to Bob's crew,
and to all of our participants.

Pioneer Point |
Pioneer Point, one
of two authentic Indian lookouts at Camp Tuscazoar, offers a panoramic view of the
northern Tuscarawas River valley, where the river flows south from Zoar past the camp.
Here, since 1925, first-time campers have placed stones upon a stone cairn. The pile was
started by former Camp Director I.W. Delp as a memorial to Revolutionary War soldiers who
built and defended nearby Ft. Laurens in 1778-1779. Through the years, the stone cairn has
also come to symbolize the spirit of Tuscazoar. In 1930 a group of boys lead by Ralph
Reichenbach spelled " Camp Tuscazoar " in white stones on the face. The letters
can still be seen more than a mile away. |
More progress on the stockade and other camp projects
Under the
guidance of project manager Harry Wood, the camp's new stockade entrance continues to take
shape. In addition to the center supports, the poles for the entire south wing have been
replaced, with the north wing scheduled to be installed in August and September. After a
few months for settling, the project will be completed next spring.
Thanks to Neil Rupe for
replacing the windows in the basement of Duryee Lodge. The new windows look much nicer,
will keep the cold air out in the winter and, with blinds added, should offer some privacy
for our campers.
A new power line has been run
to Keppler Lodge and to the latrine in Keppler field. A crew of volunteers trenched in the
new line, replacing a line that had ceased to operate. These efforts saved the Foundation
a few thousand dollars. The latrine in Keppler Field will have lights for the '98-'99
camping season. |

The stockade is reassembled under
the watchful eye of Harry Wood. A special thank you to Tom Larkin at Larkin Sewer
Contractors for donating labor and equipment. |

Shelter takes shape
Work continues on the pig
roast shelter behind Kimble Hall. Support posts have been cemented in place, and the roof
trusses have been hung as well. In August, the roof will be added, and a roasting pit will
also be constructed. Led by Dick Matheny, this project will be completed for the Pig Roast
Weekend.
Support Ohio's Most Historic
Camp
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation (CTF)
is now conducting its annual membership renewal. Since the camp's gates reopened in 1988,
thousands of visitors have camped and hiked in Tuscazoar's natural environment. The camp
is unique, with its deep valleys, challenging hills, dense forests and spectacular views
of Dover Dam and the Tuscarawas River valley. The CTF is an Ohio nonprofit corporation
dedicated to preserving this special place for future generations of youth. Several years
ago, the CTF secured a deed to 110 acres of the camp property and is now raising funds via
tax-deductible contributions for equipment, maintenance, repairs, reconstruction and
future land acquisitions. Please consider becoming a member of the Foundation. Camp
Tuscazoar needs your help!
We will keep
the spirit burning at Camp Tuscazoar.
